Officials announced on Friday that several monuments across Gettysburg National Military Park have been damaged due to vandalism.
In a post on social media, park officials said that several monuments and markers around the park had been defaced with "oil-based substances." Because of the porous stone the monuments are made of, the oil causes stains that are "nearly impossible to remove," the post said.
One of the monuments defaced was the Pennsylvania State Memorial, which displays bronze plaques honoring the members of various Pennsylvania units that participated in the Battle of Gettysburg. The park released photos of staff applying a poultice to the stone in an attempt to pull the oil out of the stone.
Officials said that the vandalism may have been intended as a symbolic or ritualistic practice, but that the damage done is real and lasting.
