A street artist dubbed “the Polish Banksy” by some is back in the spotlight after being briefly detained for spray-painting a historic wall during his latest stunt—a painting of Punch, the Japanese monkey rejected by his mother at Ichikawa Zoo.
The 28‑year‑old artist, known publicly only as Kawu, was arrested after a local resident alerted police upon spotting him painting on the wall of Poznań Zoo.
In a statement posted to Instagram, Kawu—who has been likened to Banksy for his witty work and anonymous persona—accepted responsibility for his actions but also highlighted what he described as the neglected state of the wall he is accused of defacing.
“When I chose this place and saw its condition, I didn’t think it could possibly be a historical monument,” he wrote. “It’s a bit sad that the city is letting such places fall into such disrepair,” he added.
