A female chimpanzee escaped her enclosure at the Indianapolis Zoo. The incident occurred on the morning of Friday, November 14, 2025. The zoo immediately activated its emergency lockdown procedures.Visitors were directed to secure areas as a precaution. According to media, the animal was safely sedated and returned within hours. No injuries were reported to guests, staff, or the chimpanzee. The chimpanzee, named Mara, was seen outside her habitat around 10 a.m. Zoo security and animal care teams responded instantly. They had trained extensively for such an event. Indianapolis Metro Police and fire departments also arrived on scene. They assisted with the lockdown and public safety.
